Legend has it that the central South Island is covered in lupin flowers thanks to the hard work of a farmer’s wife who thought the region could do with a bit more colour. Whether that’s true or not, there’s no doubt that the lupins certainly add a rainbow palette to the Tekapo landscapes every year and draw in tens of thousands of tourists in the process. Unfortunately, Tekapo’s stunning wildflower is actually an invasive weed that has a negative effect on native plants, birds and other wildlife. But that doesn’t stop them being photogenic. Plus, with that in mind, you don’t have to feel bad if you trample the odd lupin to get the perfect shot!

So, when is the best time of year to get that perfect Instagram-worthy lupin shot? The lupins bloom in late spring and stay in flower until mid summer. In other words, that’s between November and February. Within that period, though, the best time where the flowers really peak is roughly between mid-November and late December or early January. This, of course, will change depending on the weather. The flowers look their absolute best at sunrise and sunset, the golden hours for photography. Make sure you stay safe and park your car in a suitable spot off the side of the road when you go lupin hunting! Or, stay at The Cairns and you’ll be just a short walk from the perfect shot.
